Back-water valve Installation. Basement Flooding Subsidy Program
Check our Basement Flooding Page for more information about Back-Water Valve installation, who needs to install Back water valve,
who is eligable for rebate and how Back water valve works to prevent flooding.
Drainage standards have changed over the years.
Basement is a serious problem that affects
residents in many municipalities. Basement floodings generally occur
during snow melts and heavy rainfall and can cause
serious damage and inconvenience.

ANTA Plumbing Inc. Sump pit installation
Basic steps to protect basement from flooding
Basic protective steps homeowners should take include:
- Installing a back-flow valve (Back-water valve) to storm and combinied sewer system
- Installing a Sump pump
- Disconnecting downspouts
- Installing a rain barrel
- Sealing leaky basement (waterproofing or crack repair)
Sewage pump (Ejector pump)
A sewage pump has one job — to move solids and liquids between locations when sewage line can not be installed (reason: too low toilet level is installed compare the existing building drain).
A sewage pump will sit in a sewage basin, which must naturally be in the
lowest area of the location needing drained (basement area)
The main point for many residential consumers is determining what size of a sewage pump to buy.
The pumps are usually rated in horsepower, and most pumps are between half a horsepower and one horsepower.
The size of the pump should be based on the amount of sewage generally needing to be transported.
Plumber will calcute and recommend you the right choice for your needs.
Sump Pit
A sump pit drainage system includes a sump pit, a sump pump and a discharge pipe.
The sump pit, set into the basement floor, collects water from the weeping tiles around your basement.
The pump pushes the water outside your house through the discharge pipe
Sump Pit maintenance
- Clean the pit each year after winter time. Weeping tile drainage may carry small amounts of soil, sand and
debris into the pit.
- Water may remain in the pit and cause a smell if it sits for a long time. You can flush the pit by adding fresh water
until the pump removes the stale water.
Sump Pump
A sump pump is a pump used to remove water that has accumulated in a sump pit.
A sump pit, commonly found in the home basement, is simply a hole to collect water.
The water may enter via the perimeter drains of a basement waterproofing system,
funneling into the pit, or may arrive because of rain or because of natural ground
water, if the basement is below the water table level.
In some cases, a sump pump is used when a lower floor is below the municipal sewer
lines, to pump greywater or black water waste from that floor to the sewer lines
We've got interesting emergency call with "strange noises coming up from sump pump".
When we reached the placed we found sump pump installed without back flow preventer.
What does it mean? In outdoor plumbing, any supply line must be fitted with a device
known as a back flow preventer. Back flow preventer ensure that contaminated water is
never siphoned back into household plumbing system by a sudden drop in pressure, such
as might occur if a supply main ruptures.
Sump pumps are installed particularly where basement flooding is seen as a problem,
but are also used to ameliorate dampness where the water table is normally above
the foundation of a home. Sump pumps send water away from a house to any place where
it no longer presents a problem, such as a municipal storm drain or a dry well.
Older properties may have their sump pumps connected to the sanitary sewer,
but this is frowned upon now (and may be against the plumbing code) because
it can overwhelm the municipal sewage treatment system.
Sump Pump Maintenance
A sump pump plays a pivotal role in your home's drainage system. Two types of sump pump: for clear water and for waste system.
In fact, the effectiveness
of your drainage system is wholly dependent on the smooth operation of the pump.
- Check and test your pump each spring and each fall before the rainy season begins.
- Remove and thoroughly clean the pump at least once a year. Be sure that you disconnect the electric plug first!!!
Overflow protection - Battery backup pump
Battery backup sump pumps is flood prevention systems. There are many things that can go wrong down in
the sump pit to cause basement flooding - power outage, a failed sump pump, a
stuck float switch.
By using a battery backup sump pump your basement will remain dry during any of these occurrences.
Overflow protection - Sump pit, pump cleaning
At times, sump pump failure does happen, leaving your basement area vulnerable to costly damage.
The best way to avoid this potential damage is to closely follow the guidelines laid out in the owner's
manual which provides the necessary instructions for proper pump maintenance and operation.
The first rule of prevention is to keep your pump clean.
To properly clean your sump pump, use a pair of rubber gloves to collect all debris.
Next, take a garden hose and fill the pump with water. As you fill the pump with water,
the float will rise causing the pump to activate again. Check breaker on a control panel.
If your float rises but does not start the system, it is time to consult the plumber.
